Southeast Safety Manager Allen Owen took a break from his standard Martin Marietta responsibilities on Sept. 11 to represent the company at the inaugural Blue Mass – a non-denominational event held at Auburn, Alabama’s St. Michael the Archangel Parish Church to honor those who died on Sept. 11, 2001, and recognize the efforts of today’s first responders.

The gathering, which was attended by about 30 police officers, firefighters and paramedics, allowed people to remember the tragedy in their own way, Owen said, adding that some prayed while others simply observed a moment of silence.

“We all just wanted our first responders to know that we appreciate what they do day in and day out,” Owen said. “For me, it was a moment to reflect on 9/11 and another way to show my support for the men and women who protect us each day.”
