Dozen team members honored during Maryland safety celebration

A group of Capital District professionals were honored during the MTBMA 2025 Safety Awards Banquet

A group of Capital District professionals were honored recently during the Maryland Transportation Builders & Materials Association’s (MTBMA) 2025 Safety Awards Banquet.

Colin Fromille from Churchville Quarry, Jake Marble from Medford Quarry, and Elena Halsband from Frederick Quarry received Aggregate Safety Awards for their consistent attention to safe practices in daily operations.

Scott Bosley from Churchville Quarry and Kevin Cantalupo from North East Quarry received the Ed Tracey Distinguished Supervisor Safety Award in recognition of their leadership and commitment to fostering a safe work environment.

The Safety Excellence Award was created to honor those who go above and beyond in identifying and addressing safety concerns. This year, the honor was awarded to Mark Hushon Jr. from Texas Quarry, Jacob Clausius from North East Quarry, Jeff Klug from Churchville Quarry, Anthony Clements from Midlothian Quarry, Justin Culpepper from Doswell Quarry and Robert Duty from Anderson Creek Quarry.

Tony Perez, a safety professional in the Capital District, worked closely with MTBMA to help establish the Safety Excellence Award and said the award is designed to recognize those who are directly involved in creating safer workplaces.

“This ‘boots on the ground’ award aims to recognize anyone who’s directly involved in identifying and addressing safety concerns,” Perez said.
“These people demonstrate their commitment through their actions and decisions while setting the tone for a positive safety culture.”

While helping plan the awards with MTBMA’s safety committee, Perez was unaware that he himself would be honored. During the ceremony, he was surprised with the Safety Visionary Award, which is given annually to one individual who exemplifies leadership and dedication to advancing safety within their organization and the industry.

Perez described the moment as deeply meaningful.

“My transition from military to civilian life has been filled with many challenges, especially when it comes to rediscovering that same sense of purpose and recognition. This moment was not just a simple acknowledgment; it felt like a bridge between two meaningful chapters of my life,” he said.
“Being recognized by my team in a way that mirrored the camaraderie and respect I experienced during my time in the Marine Corps confirmed that my leadership, dedication and drive still resonate.”

Capital District Vice President-General Manager Marc Kmec credited the award winners for their exceptional work in making Martin Marietta a safer company.

“Seeing them recognized before hundreds of our industry peers was very special,” he said.
“We strive to celebrate the ‘small ZEROs.’ Those moments when we make the safe decision and each and every day that our teammates go home safely. These are the events that make a larger celebration like this well deserved.”
