Martin Marietta Aggregates is committed
to providing superior quality aggregates and outstanding customer
service in an industry where price and location are important
factors.
Aggregates products can be transported
by truck, rail, barge and oceangoing vessel, with transportation
costs varying depending on the mode of transport and distance
hauled. A major trend in the aggregates industry is the increase
in long-distance shipments by rail, barge and oceangoing vessel.
In 1994, approximately 93% of Martin Marietta's shipments
were by truck and 7% by rail. In 2001, truck shipments were
77%, rail shipments were 15% and water shipments accounted
for 8%.
Aggregates producers shipping by truck
rarely ship more than 25 to 50 miles. However, through the
Company's combination of quarries in the Caribbean, Canada,
and along the Ohio and Mississippi River systems, Martin Marietta
Aggregates is capable of economically shipping over 1,500
miles to customers with access to rivers and seaports
Truck
Seventy-seven percent of shipments are by truck. |

Rail
The acquisition of the Meridian Aggregates Company, early in 2001, significantly enhanced Martin Marietta Materials' rail distribution network west of the Mississippi. |
